Spoke tension meter calibration

I use my custom made calibration device to regularly ensure my tension meter tools are calibrated properly and that I get an accurate tension reading from different types of spokes. 1. Tension meters needs to be regularly calibrated for proper accuracy, as readings will change over time due to normal wear and tear, especially from the spring mechanism. 

2. Some brand new tension meters might not even be calibrated properly! Based on my personal experience, customer experiences and some forum chat research, this is unfortunately a recurring situation.

3. Spoke tension charts provided with spoke tension meters don't consider different manufacturers and grades of steel. For example a 14G (2mm) silver DT Champion spoke will not have the same tension reading as a 14G (2mm) silver Pillar PSR14

4. Incredible but true, even spoke color matters for an accurate spoke tension reading! As the spoke tension reading is based in part on the spoke thickness, you will get completely different tension reading from a white spoke which has a much thicker coat of paint than a black spoke.
